I heard about this project about a month after Kaija had passed away. I had always felt that she was a very warm and loving person, but I learned then that she had secretly supported young composers, including myself, during her lifetime.

 

This piece is structured like a diptych; it can be performed as one piece or as two independent works. It is an International co-commission by Muziekgebouw, The Netherlands, and Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, Japan. The first part premiered in January 2024 at Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, where Kaija’s string quartet Terra Memoria was also featured. ”Terra Memoria” is a work dedicated ”for those departed,” and transformation and continuity coexist there. As a person who was left behind in this world, I wanted to pay tribute to her by incorporating my interpretation of her powerful way of sustaining motifs.

 

The second half is inspired by the relationship between Kaija’s diptych works ”Du cristal” and” …à la Fumée,” I connected my first and second pieces. The two parts differ in structure. The first part has a circular structure, while the second depicts a linear form. At the end of the entire work, as a gesture of gratitude to her, I incorporated a motif linking ”Du cristal” and ”…à la Fumée.”

​「地上から」

このプロジェクトについて聞いたのは、カイヤが亡くなられて一ヶ月ほど経った日のことであった。人柄が大変暖かく愛情に溢れた人物であることはいつも感じていたが、生前私も含めた若手作曲家たちを様々な団体へ推薦し応援してくれていたことはその時知ることとなった。

コンサートで同時に演奏されるのは彼女の二作目の弦楽四重奏「テッラ・メモリア」、旅立ってしまった人々へ献呈されている作品である。作品の中では変化と継続が共存している。地上に残される側となってしまった私は、彼女への敬意を表し、カイヤの力強いモチーフ継続の仕方を自分なりに引用したいと思う。また本作品は二連祭壇画の一枚目の作品として独立し、しかし次作の二曲目と同時に演奏することも可能な形態の作品である。

一曲目と二曲目の繋がりは、カイヤの二連祭壇画作品の「ドゥ・クリスタル」と「...ア・ラ・フュメ」の関係性に影響を受けている。二曲目は一曲目とは異なる構造をしている。一曲目の構造が円形を描くのに対し、二曲目は一方向への線形を描く。作品全体の終わりでは、カイヤへの感謝の気持ちを込めて「ドゥ・クリスタル」と「...ア・ラ・フュメ」を繋ぐモチーフを引用している。
