Mineralization is a commissioned piece for Uusinta Ensemble and marks my third collaboration with them. I began by searching for a musical idea that I enjoy listening to. I wrote down the ideas, playing techniques, and their combinations, as well as a plan for the structure of the piece. I also tried out some of the techniques on my own violin.The piece is like a collection of small crystals that have transformed in different ways. Sometimes the transformation of the core happens as if the mineral were being viewed under a microscope. These days, I think about how I can create “fun” contemporary music. I want to convey that contemporary music is free and not difficult to listen to. This time, I wanted to create a rhythmically engaging piece.

Mineralization on Uusinta Ensembleen tilausteos ja kolmas yhteistyö heidän kanssa.
Ensin etsin musiikillista ideaa, jota tykkään kuunnella. Kirjoitin ylös ideat, soittotekniikat ja niiden kombinaatioita, sekä suunnitelman teoksen rakenteesta. Kokeilun myös itse soittotekniikoita omalla viululla.
Teos on kuin kokoelma pieniä kristalleja, jotka ovat muuttuneet eri tavoin. Ytimen muutos tapahtuu joskus myös niin, että sitä tarkastellaan kuin mikroskoopilla suurennettua mineraalia. Nykyään ajattelen, miten voin luoda ”hauskaa” nykymusiikkia. Haluaisin kertoa, että nykymusiikki on vapaata eikä sitä ole vaikeaa kuunnella. Tällä kertaa halusin tehdä rytmikkään teoksen.

Mineralization is a gem of Finnish contemporary music that skilfully and ambitiously takes advantage of the opportunities offered by a chamber music ensemble. Modern playing techniques, such as preparing violin and cello strings with Blu Tack, combine with porous, percussive and frictional sounds. This is how Yokoyama creates an intriguing super instrument, the sounds of which merge in an inventive way.
Mineralization “rocks” and feels approachable from the very first listening session, yet still offers new dimensions over and over again. The work delights the senses not only with the image it creates with sound, but also with its physical and visual power. Yokoyama beautifully creates a space in her music where the listener can experience and interpret the work from their own starting point.

Mioko Yokoyaman kekseliäälle kokoonpanolle sävelletty Mineralization tavoittaa mestarillisesti instrumenttien mahdollisuuksien kirjon. Käytössä ovat niin erilaiset soittotekniikat kuin soittajien oma ääni. Teos kehittyy kudelmaksi, joka imaisee kuulijan mukaansa matkalle aistien ja sointivärien maailmaan. Se luo rohkeasti uutta sointikieltä esittämättä vaikeasti tavoiteltavaa. Sen herättämät assosiaatiot ulottuvat kivien kimaltelevista pinnoista junamatkustamiseen ja piirrossarjoihin. Mineralization onnistuu myös taidemusiikille harvinaisehkossa hyveessä: huumorissa.
